The Atemangwat of Lewoh’s Memorable Visit to the United States
On August 11, 2018, His Royal Majesty, the Atemangwat of Lewoh, along with members of the royal family, arrived in the United States, touching down at JFK International Airport in New York at approximately 1:20 PM. They were warmly received by the New York branch of LECUDEM USA, led by the National President, Martin Becha.
Dressed in vibrant purple and pink lace attire, members of the welcoming committee carried traditional drums, a ceremonial umbrella for the Fon, and other cultural accessories, preparing for a royal welcome fit for their king. The scene at the airport quickly drew attention from travelers and staff alike, many of whom paused to admire the spectacle. Onlookers whispered in amazement, some commenting, “African culture is still very strong among many Africans.”
As the Atemangwat emerged from the checkpoint, ululations filled the air. His subjects respectfully prostrated and greeted him in the traditional Lewoh manner, captivating all who witnessed the moment. The excitement continued as the Fon was escorted into a pristine white limousine and driven in a convoy to the residence of Mafuo Legelebong (Evelyn Fotabong), where another group of LECUDEM members and supporters awaited his arrival.
The welcome ceremony was emceed by Paul Ndemalia and began with the elders—Bekems and others—greeting the Fon in the customary way: prostrating, clapping their hands twice in three intervals, and holding their hats under their arms. This deep display of cultural respect left a lasting impression on the foreign guests in attendance. Some noted that they had only ever seen such ceremonies in movies and were thrilled to witness the authenticity in person.
During her welcome speech, Mafuo Legelebong expressed her gratitude to everyone who came to receive her father and encouraged continued love and unity within the community. National President Martin Becha thanked God for the royal family’s safe journey and assured the Atemangwat of LECUDEM USA’s unwavering support, especially in light of recent challenges back home, including the attack on the palace.
When the Atemangwat addressed the crowd, he expressed heartfelt appreciation for the turnout, admitting he had not anticipated such a large and joyful reception. He praised the New York Chapter for their uniformed presence, both at the airport and during the celebration, and urged Lewoh sons and daughters across the USA and the world to uphold peace, love, and unity.
The celebration carried on joyfully into the early hours of the morning, marking a truly unforgettable occasion for all who attended.
